Should this child be suspended??

This is a tough one guys. I believe in the first amendment and the power that it gives us to free speech. However, as a teacher, I am also against things and behaviors that disrupt the learning environment. For instance cell phones, toys, clothing that reveals too much skin. Given that the boy wearing this shirt was a fifth grader, and thus surrounded by other fifth graders, I don't think it was disruptive to the learning environment. I want to say this carefully: basically fifth graders aren't old enough to be offended by name calling in politics, so therefore I don't see where the disruption occurs. What I think probably happened, is that there were teachers who did not agree with the boys shirt and they decided that they did not want to see it; I'm speculating. Case and point: do you think the student would have been asked to take off the shirt if it had said "The Jonas Brothers Support Terrorists?" Probably not, and it stands to reason that more students at this age would be disrupted by an attack on the Jonas Brothers than on Barack Obama right?? Your thoughts??

I don't think he should be suspended. He does have the freedom of speech, but the way his day was talking I don't think the idea was solely the boys he probably just wanted approval from his father.

I think this boy shouldn't wear this shirt to school because it was home made.I am a democratic and i think this kid doesn't know what he's talking about.

I think they should just have called his parents and told them if they could bring him another shirt.

I think that he should have been suspended. That is because you have freedom of speech to a point, but once it starts to disrupt the school environment then I think that the school has a problem. Once it infringes on peoples rights then it is a problem for the students. Also, if he really wanted to make a point about politics then he could go to mccain rallies. Also, he was given the chance not to be suspended and he chose to be suspended so its basically his own fault.

I dont think that he should get suspended because he has the freedom to wear what ever he wants. I also think that some of the staff had problems with the shirt he was wearing because they liked Obama. I think that instead of suspending the boy that they should have called his parents and asked them to bring him another shirt if they had such a big problem! so yeah i think that what they did was stupid!!!
